South Florida Muslims Hold Bi-Annual General Body Meeting.

The South Florida Muslim Federation held its Bi-Annual General Body meeting on 01/23/2021 at 3:00 pm via Zoom with 40+ members of the Federation participating to discuss South Florida Muslim affairs.

During the meeting, the Executive Committee presented the membership with important updates about Federation activities and accomplishments over the last 6 months. The updates included a welcome address by the President of the Federation, Samir Kakli. During the meeting, the members of the Federation heard from Samir Kakli about the recent activities of the Imams Council, Yunus Ismail about the projects undertaken by Social Service Council, Maha Elkolalli Esq. about the Community Outreach initiatives and Federation Secretary Afifa Khaliq about the Capacity Building Program. Federation’s newly redesigned website was also introduced in the meeting.

EMGAGE Director Operations, Ancel Pratt, joined the meeting and updated the community about Muslim Voters’ Day to drive Muslims to vote in the primary and general elections. It was the first time South Florida that a campaign of such magnitude was carried out. Pratt expressed his hope that the day becomes a regular part of the election season to keep Muslims engaged in the civic process as well as promote issues important to the community.

Maha Elkollali Esq, spoke about community outreach efforts and recent events to include: efforts to convince School Board of Broward County to pass a resolution declaring Eid as an official holiday in the school calendar. Other prominent initiatives of the committee include Mandatory Reporting for Sexual and Child Abuse, Racial Justice Rallies and Coalition Building Efforts, and an introduction of the federation to legal, law enforcement, social and political agencies in the tri-county area.

Yunus Ismail, Federation Executive member spoke about the members of the Social Service Council and the programs they are currently running to include: Economic Assistance, Hunger Prevention, Shelter Services, Free Medical Clinics, and Other Healthcare Services, Disaster Relief, Free backpack distribution, Refugee Services, and Youth Services. He put special focus on the ongoing COVID-19 Vaccine awareness efforts of the council.
