The Miami Herald published an op-ed this week co-authored by Samir Kakli, our interim executive director, alongside Adam Abutaa of Emgage, taking a closer look at Miami-Dade County’s investment in Israeli bonds and how county commissioners responded when residents came to speak during public comment. The piece examines both the fiscal side of the investment and the treatment of community members who exercised their right to be heard.

The op-ed raises questions about how public dollars are put to work for the people who live here. “In the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, that money could instead go toward roads, small business support or affordable housing in our own neighborhoods,” the authors write.

Seeing members of our community publishing in outlets like the Miami Herald reflects something larger: South Florida’s Muslims are active participants in the civic life of this region. When our communities engage with local government — showing up, speaking, writing, and organizing — they carry forward a tradition of civic responsibility rooted in our faith. Coverage like this is a reminder that our community’s voice belongs in the public square.
