Honoring the Victims of Genocide: A Reflection on the Guatemala Commemoration

On February 23rd, we had the honor of attending Guatemala’s 23 Massacre Victims Commemoration at Our Lady of Guadalupe National Catholic Church. The event paid tribute to the countless indigenous lives lost during the genocide in Guatemala, with photographs on display serving as a solemn reminder of their stories. Traditional indigenous tamales and related dishes were shared, representing the cultural heritage of those affected.

Our own Brother Wilfredo A. Ruiz spoke at the podium, offering prayers for the victims and acknowledging the ongoing genocides in Gaza, Syria, Sudan, Congo and other countries. He also highlighted the immense pain endured by survivors of such atrocities.

Every year on February 25th, Guatemala observes the National Day of Dignification for the Victims of the Internal Armed Conflict (IAC). Survivors and families march from the Human Rights Plaza at the Palace of Justice to the National Palace of Culture in Guatemala City, honoring the more than 200,000 people killed and 45,000 disappeared during the conflict. Through songs, ceremonies, and altars, they continue to preserve the memory of their loved ones and advocate for justice.
