In an OpEd written for Sun Sentinel on the desecration of Holy Quran in Sweden, Imam Azhar Subedar, Development Director of SFL Muslim Federation, talked about how unchecked exercise of rights can be seen as a privilege not everyone can claim.
Here are some of the excerpts from the OpEd:
“Is religious hatred outside the scope of my freedom or within it? It all depends on how we, as a society, define the use or abuse of that freedom.
“Agreed-upon morals and social norms once served as the gauge for identifying those boundaries, but today, the wishes and feelings of individuals seem paramount.
“When one segment of America uses their “right” as a power over others, and in response, these “others” begin to believe those very rights are only a privilege for some and not them, we have compromised the very democracy that was established for the protection of all.”
