Islamophobe’s Defamation lawsuit against CAIR-FL dismissed
Self-Proclaimed Islamophobe David Rosenthal’s Defamation Lawsuit Against CAIR-Florida and its Directors Dismissed
(MIAMI, FL, 11/29/17) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations – Florida (CAIR – FL), the state’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today announced the dismissal of a defamation lawsuit against the organization brought by David Rosenthal, a self-proclaimed Islamophobe. Rosenthal sued CAIR-Florida and three of its directors — Hassan Shibly, Nezar Hamze, and Wilfredo A. Ruiz — after CAIR-Florida reported an apparent Mosque threat to law enforcement and issued a news release about that alleged threat. The story was reported by CBS12 and other media outlets.
“This is a victory for the First Amendment and sends a powerful message in support of free speech. CAIR-Florida’s mission to protect the community and defend American Muslim civil rights will not be deterred by these frivolous lawsuits,” said Hassan Shibly, CAIR-Florida’s Chief Executive Director and a co-defendant in the case.
Nezar Hamze, CAIR-Florida’s Regional Operations Director, and also a co-defendant said, “The safety and security of our places of worship and our community is an utmost priority of CAIR-Florida. We will never hesitate to report any perceived threats to all law enforcement agencies, both local and federal.”
The third co-defendant, CAIR-Florida’s Communications Director Wilfredo A. Ruiz, added, “Let it be known to anybody considering filing frivolous lawsuits against CAIR-Florida or any of its directors that we will respond strongly and you will be held responsible for costs and attorney fees as well.”
CAIR-Florida is the state’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties of all people, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR-Florida es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
