American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) in collaboration with SFL Muslim Federation and over 80 partner organizations, held a Q&A session with Dr Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Adviser on COVID-19 to President Joe Biden.
He was joined by Dr Shereef Al-Nahaal, a renowned physician and Dr Noor Jihan Abdul-Haqq, a pediatrician and advocate of minority communities, during an hour long session moderated by President of AMHP Dr Hasan Shanawani.
The session took up questions ranging from general queries regarding the need, efficacy and availability of the COVID-19 vaccine to the more specific concerns of Muslim community on the permissibility of the vaccine.
Addressing these questions, Dr Fauci asserted that as medical experts, physicians and researchers, such skepticism should not be brushed off, instead it should be addressed with sound knowledge supported with facts about COVID-19 vaccine. These assertions were corroborated by Dr Nahaal and Dr Haqq, who further added the need to mobilizing and working with faith based communities to maximize the reach of COVID-19 vaccine as well as the message of social distancing.
The panelist also emphasized on the need to take serious concerted efforts towards understanding and dealing with mental health issues due isolation and lockdown as a result of the pandemic.
